Kindred spirits in many ways — including their mutual appreciation for poetic lyrics and timeless melodies, as well as a passion for social activism — each of these prolific and empowered songwriters/producers are highly accomplished, yet refreshingly down-to-earth. Expect a healthy dose of off-kilter humor and uproarious antics alongside introspective lyricism and top-notch musicianship, in a transformative evening of uplift from two of contemporary folk’s most memorable live performers. On Circumstance, her second and latest album (due out April 2023), the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter guitarist displays her vocal prowess and introspective writing in abundance, mining both her heart and her musical tastes for a deep, personal journey across an Americana soundscape dotted with blues, folk, country, soul and rock. Recorded in two sessions at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where Etta James and Wilson Pickett once shook the walls, the record channels their spirits with 11 stirring tracks that pull no punches diving into the vagaries of the heart and her own personal journey. As an old soul inside a 30-something millennial, Alice puts her stamp on Americana’s venerable strands with 10 standout originals evoking both the classic singer-songwriters and the seminal music that once filled airwaves, roadhouses and juke joints. Circumstance was produced by Alice’s creative collaborator Freebo; the two have worked together in the studio and on stage since 2017. Freebo weaves his unique fretless bass stylings into Alice’s superb vocals for a presentation with undeniable chemistry. Then, barely out of high school, she took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, The Roches, and others. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.”Throughout her career, Lucy was often pulled back into the studio by her friends, (who now had contracts with record labels) wanting her to sing on their albums. She harmonized on Colvin’s Grammy-winning “Steady On,” and on Nanci Griffith’s “Lone Star State of Mind” and “Little Love Affairs.” She also landed soundtrack credits, singing with Suzanne Vega on “Pretty in Pink” and with Griffith on “The Firm,” and several commercial credits as well—including “The Heartbeat of America” for Chevrolet. Acoustic and electric guitars, drums and vocal harmonies blend together to showcase the freshness and originality of the writing. Heidi Wolfson’s songs are thought-provoking and literate, and she delivers them with a singular intensity. Guitarist Art Cohen, better known in international space-music circles, adds texture, edge and hang-on-to-your-seat leads. Steve Lessick’s tasteful drumming and beautiful vocal harmonies smooth out the sound with polish. Neal Phillips adds extraordinary acoustic guitar work and driving bass.
