The Adult Literacy Program at the Kennett Library
The mission of the Adult Literacy Program (ALP) is to provide free educational instruction to community adults and to improve the literacy of the educationally disadvantaged to levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family and in society.
The ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English is crucial to living an independent life where you are able to not just survive, but thrive economically, socially, and emotionally. Every year, we continue to see the benefits our students receive from both our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and from tutoring. Through their tenacity and dedication in class and with their tutor, they are able to obtain employment, help their children, and attend school and community events.
The Adult Literacy Program (ALP) began in 1979 and is located downstairs in the Kennett Library. The program has been offering literacy services to the community for 40 years and has served more than 7,000 adult learners. Over the course of all these years, the program has been a source of hope to people from 55 different countries, representing five continents. The ALP provides English as a Second Language and adult literacy instruction for each student to achieve the literacy levels required to become more skilled in the workplace, to communicate more effectively in the family and to participate with greater ease in the community. All students have different reasons, goals, and dreams for acquiring English literacy. The ALP offers day classes, evening classes, and computer English Language Lab. A unique component of the program is the one-to-one volunteer tutoring. Please call the ALP office if you would like to volunteer your time to help tutor one of our students.
